Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov has been the Rector of the University of National and World Economy since December 2019. Graduated from VII “K. Marks” - Sofia (1983-1988) with a degree in Economics and Industrial Management. He obtained the scientific degree “Doctor” (2004). Specializes in Groningen, the Netherlands Centre for European Security Studies, University of Groningen, Civil — Military Relations, sponsored by Volkswagen — Stiftung, Hannover, BRD (1997 — 1998); Bonn, Germany Bonn International Centre for Conversion (BICC) — Germany, Research fellowship on “Defence industry and conversion in Bulgaria”, sponsored by Ford Foundation (2000); Monterey, California, USA, Middlebury Institute for International Studies (MIL) IS) and Monterey, Center for Non-Proliferation (CNS), Visiting fellowship on Nuclear Security Education, sponsored by CNS (2015).
Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov's scientific interests are in the field of defense and security economics, defense economic analysis, protection of critical infrastructure and nuclear security. There have been 104 publications.
He has participated in 59 scientific projects (since 1993), including 18 international ones. He is the leader of numerous projects for the modernization of higher education, among which the project “Economic Education in Bulgaria 2030”. He is the Chairman of the National Network for Sustainable Development Solutions SDSN Bulgaria and Head of the European University ENGAGE.EU for Bulgaria. He is actively working on the National Science Program “Security and Defense”.
He is a representative of UNSS in the International Institute for Security and Cooperation, Bulgaria (since 2009) and member of the Interdepartmental Working Group for the Preparation of Draft Rules of the Interdepartmental Council on Defense Industry and Security of Supply to the Council of Ministers (2012), member of the Interdepartmental Working Group for the Preparation of a Draft Strategy for Research and Technology in Security and Defense (2012)), member of the Interdepartmental Expert Working Group on the Drafting of Rules on the Structure and Activities of the Advisory Council for assisting the Council of Ministers in shaping the state policy in the field of disaster protection (2012), member of the Standing Scientific and Expert Commission (PNEC) on social sciences and humanities at the Research Fund (2013 — 2015). He is a representative of UNSS in the Public Council on Defence Policy to the Minister of Defence (since 2013), member of the Expert Group of the Inter-Agency Council on Defence Industry and Security of Supply at the Council of Ministers (since 2014), member of the International Nuclear Security Education Network (INSEN) (since 2014), member of the Nuclear Security support Centres Network (NSSCnetwork), (since 2015), member of the Bulgarian Association for Regional Studies (BARI); Head and Deputy Head of Working Group 1 at the International Academic Network on Nuclear security, Vienna, Austria (2017 — 2019). Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov was awarded an honorary plaque of the Ministry of Defense.
